There’s really no way to prepare for the horrors of war, and when soldiers return home, they are often changed forever.
Author, and Vietnam veteran Tim O’Brien looked at that subject in the 1990 bestseller “The Things They Carried.”
It’s a collection of stories about a platoon of soldiers who fought in Vietnam, and how their experiences changed their lives, and sometimes those of the people they touched.
The book is one of the reasons O’Brien is being honored next month with the 2013 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement.
“The Things They Carried” is the focus of a community reading program in Santa Barbara involving schools, and the public, and is being capped this week with a number of local talks by the author.
KCLU’s Lance Orozco talks with O’Brien about his book.
