A firefighter suffered a leg injury in the efforts to put out a manure pile fire which started on Wednesday in Ventura.
Word of the injury came as firefighters say they contained the acre and a half blaze on the 4400 block of Olivas Park Drive yesterday. Firefighters worked to separate the pile, which was more than 10 feet deep in some places, and then put sprinklers on it to wet down the smoldering manure. The constant use of sprinklers greatly reduced the smoke coming from the pile at a shuttered mushroom farm.
The firefighter was treated at a hospital for his leg injury.
Firefighters say it could be days still before the blaze is completely extinguished.
