The governor signed into law a bill from a State Senator in the region intended to provide help for mentally ill, and developmentally disabled people in state hospitals who are the victims of abuse.
SB 651 requires suspected abuse victims at state facilities receive examinations from trained investigators.
The exams can take place at independent facilities, or at state facilities if it’s safer for the patient.
The legislation was authored by Democratic Senator Fran Pavley of Agoura Hills.
Some studies cited show that of more than 200 cases of alleged sexual abuse reported recently at state facilities, only 29 of them were followed up with exams.
