The former manager for a two time world champion boxer from Ventura County has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison for embezzling more than $400,000 from the athlete.

Joe Pecora was convicted of five counts of tax evasion, two counts of grand theft, and one count of forgery.

Prosecutors say the Newbury Park man embezzled about $470,000 from Oxnard boxer Fernando Vargas between 2003, and 2008.

In addition to the prison sentence, the 57 year old man was also ordered to pay nearly $800,000 in restitution to the retired boxer, and more than $150,000 in back taxes, and penalties.
