Burglary Suspect Shot By Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Identified As San Luis Obispo County Man

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 12:01am

Authorities say a San Luis Obispo County man is the burglary suspect shot by a deputy after officers say he tried to steal a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department patrol car.

It happened Sunday night, when deputies were called to a home on the 3200 block of Beach Club Drive in Carpinteria, by reports of a burglary in progress.  They found a man inside, arrested him, handcuffed him, and put him in the back of a patrol car.  As deputies were investigating, the man kicked out the plexiglas partition separating the front, and rear seat.

Deputies say the man got into the front seat, and tried to drive away in the patrol car, which had some loaded weapons in it.   One deputy opened fire, striking the man, and stopping the vehicle.

Authorities say the man is Jeremy Leon Bordegaray, of Cayucos.  The 29 year old man remains in critical condition at a hospital.  No one else was hurt.
