Popular Central Coast Beach Closed to Protect Rare Bird’s Habitat Set To Reopen

Posted on Thursday, September 26, 2013 2:42pm

A popular Central Coast beach closed to protect the breeding habitat of a rare bird will reopen this weekend.

Surf Beach, on Vandenberg Air Force Base, will reopen to the public on Saturday.  The beach has been closed since June 6th to protect the breeding grounds for the Western Snowy Plover.

Surf Beach  isn’t always closed during breeding season, but if there are more than a specific number of intrusions into the key habitat areas, the entire section of beach is temporarily shut down to the public. The beach was shut down in May as a result of the violations.
