It was the focus of controversy over the summer, but a new department store officially opened its doors for the first time on the Central Coast today.
The new 87,000 square foot Fallas store opened in Town Center West in Santa Maria.
The store went into a building which had been vacant for years, after the Mervyn’s department store chain folded.
The plans created debate because some Santa Maria officials were concerned that Fallas wasn’t upscale enough for their vision of reinvigorating that section of the city.
After a lengthy debate, the City Council approved the store’s opening on a 4-1 vote.
