Ventura County University Challeges Affordable Care Act Mandate To Provide Contaceptive Services For Employees

Posted on Friday, September 20, 2013 3:18pm

A Ventura County college has filed suit against the federal government, claiming its rights to religious freedom are being violated by the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that employers make contraceptive services available to workers.

The suit by Thomas Aquinas College alleges that the mandate unlawfully requires employers with religiously motivated objections to provide coverage for abortion producing products, sterilization, contraception, and related education.

The suit was filed in conjunction with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington, and the Catholic University of America.

A federal appeals court rejected a suit on the same issue by Liberty University in July, but officials with the Virginia college say they are appealing.

Thomas Aquinas College is a four year, Catholic liberal arts college with just under 400 students, based outside of Santa Paula.
