State Legislature Still Looking At Proposed Funding For Port Hueneme Coastal Erosion Crisis

Posted on Thursday, September 12, 2013 12:45am

Will the State Legislature come through today for a Ventura County community being hard hit by coastal erosion?

Today is the final day of the legislature’s 2013 session, and two emergency bills by local legislators to help Port Hueneme haven’t made it to final votes yet.

With the federal government cutting back on its semi-annual distribution of sand to compensate for the sand disruption caused decades ago by the Port of Hueneme, the ocean washed away an entire section of Hueneme Beach, and threatened a sidewalk and street.

The City of Port Hueneme spent about a half million dollars on emergency repair work, but needs state help for more repairs while the appeal to the federal government for long term solutions.

The governor’s office has helped with the two pieces of legislation to try to secure two million dollars in emergency funding, but the State Assembly, and State Senate have to approve the proposals before the governor can act on them.
