A decades old aviary which almost closed for good because Ventura County didn’t have the money for a needed refurbishment will officially reopen this weekend.
Community leaders, and volunteers who spearheaded the effort to save the Steckel Park aviary, near Santa Paula will be on hand for tomorrow’s ceremonies.
A grass roots campaign raised more than $180,000 to fix up the facility, and volunteers donated more than 4400 hours of labor to get the work done. The project included rebuilding the enclosures for the 50 birds, repairing a building roof, and fences, fixing the parking lot, and adding a sidewalk.
Ventura County Animal Control provided temporary housing for the assortment of birds while the year and a half refurbishment project took place. The celebration begins at 4 p.m. tomorrow, at the aviary.
