A controversial proposal to open a new department store on the Central Coast is a go this morning.
The Santa Maria City Council last night approved plans to open a Fallas store at the site of a long shuttered Mervyn’s at the Town Center West Shopping Center.
The proposal was controversial, because some people feel the store isn’t upscale enough to fit in with the city’s plans to revitalize that part of the city.
The city’s Planning Commission had already recommended approval of the new store. If renovation work goes as planned, the store will open this fall.
