Final approval of controversial plans to open a new department store on the Central Coast could mean as many as 80 new jobs.
The Santa Maria City Council last night approved a proposal to build a new Fallas Department store at the sight of a closed Mervyn’s in Santa Maria.
The proposal had been controversial, because some people felt the store might not be upscale enough to fit in with plans to upgrade the area.
But in the end, the City Council approved the proposal for the store in Town Center West.
There’s no word on exactly when the store will start hiring.
Plans call for the store to open this fall.
