Posted on Thursday, July 18, 2013 3:01pm

A Santa Barbara County man has been sentenced to 17 years, to life in prison for murdering a caretaker for his great grandmother.

Philip Johnson entered a guilty plea to a second degree murder charge for the May, 2012 slaying of Asta Elliott.

Johnson shared a room in the Mission Hills area, just outside of Lompoc, with the 64 year old woman.

Prosecutors say Johnson stabbed her to death while on a drug binge.

As a result of a plea deal, Johnson will have to spend at least 17 years behind bars before he’s eligible for parole.
