CHP Says DUI Driver Responsible For Five Vehicle Accident Which Closed 101 Freeway In Santa Barbara

Posted on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 2:50pm

The CHP says a DUI driver who crashed on the 101 Freeway in Santa Barbara caused a chain reaction of accidents, involving five vehicles.

Investigators say it started at around 4:30 a.m., when a car being driven northbound on the 101 at El Sueno Road crashed into the right shoulder guardrail, spinning into the center of the freeway, fully or partially blocking all three lanes.  The driver, and passenger in the car were able to get out of it safely, and onto the shoulder, but the damaged vehicle was sitting broadside to incoming traffic, with no lights.

The blockage caused four separate collisions, leaving one of the six people in the vehicles with serious injuries.  The freeway was closed for about two hours.  The driver of the car which started the series of crashes, identified as Alejandro Morales-Moscaria of Isla Vista, was arrested on a DUI charge.

The CHP will close the 101 Freeway around El Sueno Road at 10 tonight, so they can continue to investigate what happened.  Traffic will be routed around the closure on surface streets.
