Authorities Release Name Of Man Shot To Death In Confrontation With Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies

Posted on Monday, July 15, 2013 4:26pm

Authorities have now released the name of a man shot to death in a confrontation with Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies, but investigators say they are still trying to figure out why the man led them on a chase, and then pulled a gun on officers.

It happened just after 5:30 p.m. Friday night.  Deputies were called to the Sulphur Mountain Road area, near Oak View, by reports of a man behaving suspiciously.  When they responded to the scene, the man sped away in a vehicle, leading them on a short chase.

They say Daniel Houfek stopped at the end of Old Creek Road, got out of his vehicle, and pointed a gun at deputies.  Officers opened fire, fatally wounding the 42 year old Ventura man.  There’s no word on how many shots were fired.  The deputies were unhurt.
