Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy, Suspect Injured In Chase, Arrest

Posted on Friday, July 12, 2013 10:24am

A Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries, as did a suspect following a carjacking, and chase, which led to an arrest.

It started just after 5:30 last night, in Newbury Park.  Deputies were called to a home on the 500 block of Canyon Vista Drive.  A woman said when she arrived home from work, there was a man in her house who demanded her car keys.

She complied with the demand, and the man left with her car.

Deputies spotted the vehicle in the parking lot at Los Robles Medical Center, but when they approached it, they say the driver, Donald Anthony Kelly, sped away, leading to an eight mile chase, which hit 80 miles an hour at times on surface streets.  He hit four vehicles, including two sheriff’s patrol cars.

The car finally went off a road, and crashed into a rock.  After a short foot chase, the 31 year old transient was arrested on more than a half dozen charges, including kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
