National Park Service Volunteer Dies In Channel Islands Accident

Posted on Thursday, July 11, 2013 11:19am

A National Park Service volunteer died in the Channel Islands, after falling while boarding a boat at a dock.

Joe Wysocki was on the landing dock ladder at Anacapa Island Wednesday afternoon trying to bard the Park Service vessel Ocean Ranger when he slipped, hitting his head as he fell into the water.  Park staff, volunteers, and a visitor pulled the 65 year old man out of the water, and started first aid efforts.

A Ventura County Sheriff’s Department helicopter flew a paramedic team to the island.  But, efforts to revive Wysocki were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, about 45 minutes after the accident.

Wysocki was a volunteer with the park since November of 2011, helping with audio visual projects.  In the 1990′s, he had worked for the park as a park naturalist.  Wysocki had worked as a physicist at a research lab in Malibu.

There’s no word yet on memorial services.
