South Coast Beaches Closed Due To Great White Shark Sighting Expected To Reopen

Posted on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 12:17am

Three beaches in Santa Barbara County are expected to reopen today, after being closed since the weekend after some kayakers had a close encounter with a great white shark.

Two off duty firefighters were kayaking off of Tajiguas State Beach when they say an approximately 12 foot long great white passed under their craft, hitting one of them.  The kayak was undamaged, and didn’t overturn.

The shark then left the area.

After the firefighters reported their close call, the State Parks Department ordered a precautionary 72 hour closure of the water off of Refugio State Beach, El Capitan State Beach, and Tajiguas State Beach.  The actual beaches remained open.
