Firefighter From Santa Barbara County Among Those Killed In Arizona Blaze

Posted on Monday, July 1, 2013 1:08pm

The deadly brush fire which killed 19 firefighters in Arizona has hit home in Santa Barbara County, with word that one of those who died is from the Santa Ynez Valley.

Sean Misner attended Santa Ynez High School, and was a varsity football player there in 2004, and 2005.  Misner is the nephew of Montecito Fire Department Operations Chief Terry McElwee, and the grandson of longtime Montecito Fire Chief Herb McElwee.

He leaves behind a pregnant wife.

The firefighters were trying to battle a massive blaze burning near Yarnell, Arizona when they were overrun by the flames.

They deployed emergency fire shelters, but they apparently weren’t enough to save them from the inferno.

More than 200 homes have been destroyed by the fire, which was apparently triggered by a lighting strike on Friday.

The Montecito Firefighters Charitable Association has set up a fund to raise money for the families of the 19 firefighters killed in the blaze.
