A new Ventura County Grand Jury report says while a woman in custody at a county jail facility died from natural causes, it asserts a lack of timely medical care was a factor.

Eydie Stepelton was in custody last August at the Main Jail’s Medical/Special Housing Unit when she died.

The Grand Jury says their report shows she asked to be taken to a hospital, but wasn’t, even though her health declined rapidly.

The report also claims there were discrepancies in the 53 year old woman’s records taken by different jail employees during the 24 hour period in custody up to her death.

The Medical Examiner’s office ruled that the death was due to natural causes, which they say appeared to be bacterial sepsis.

The Grand Jury is recommending that the county hire a medical care provider for jail facilities, and in the interim, it should review, and revise its care policies.
