Santa Maria City Council Looks At Controversy Surrounding Proposed New Store

Posted on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 12:23am

A Central Coast community could decide a controversy over whether a new discount store should be allowed in a vacant building.

The Santa Maria City Council tonight is scheduled to look at a proposal to allow a Fallas store at the site of a long vacant Mervyn’s in the city’s downtown area, on the 200 block of Town Center West.

The Santa Maria Planning Commission approved the proposal, but some City Council members say they’re concerned the store isn’t upscale enough to fit in with a goal of revitalizing the downtown business district.

The council is also looking at a suggestion to put a moratorium on discount stores in the city’s core area, to give it more time to sort out what it does downtown.
