A man already in prison for multiple stabbings in Santa Barbara County could spend the rest of his life behind bars for attacking a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputy at a jail holding facility.
Prosecutors say while awaiting trial, Lorenzo Padilla attacked a guard with a homemade knife in October of 2011.
The deputy survived his injuries.
Padilla was later convicted of three counts of attempted murder, and is serving a 57 years to life sentence in state prison.
But, he will now face a new trial for the attack on the deputy, and face attempted murder and aggravated mayhem charges,
along with special allegations the crime was committed on behalf of a street gang.
A conviction on the new counts could put Padilla behind bars for the rest of his life.
