Man Who Fired Shot In Ventura County Home Arrested After Eight Hour Standoff

Posted on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 1:46pm

A Ventura County man armed with a gun surrendered to police after an eight hour standoff.

It started just after 10:30 last night, on the 5900 block of Fasley Avenue in Simi Valley, with a report of shots being fired. Simi Valley Police officers say they found that a man had fired shots at his roommate’s door, in order to get inside of it. The roommate was able to escape from the home safely.

Officers say they ordered Dustin Helm to come outside unarmed, but that he refused to cooperate. A crisis negotiation team, and a SWAT team were called to the scene. After talking all night, the 27 year old man surrendered just after 6:30 this morning.

Police say Helm was on probation, and was prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was arrested for shooting a weapon in an inhabited dwelling, but police say more criminal charges are pending.
