A state assemblyman from Ventura County who served in Afghanistan is calling for the federal government to expedite stalled immigration applications for Afgan nationals.
Republican Assemblyman Jeff Gorrell of Camarillo says with the drawdown of coalition forces in Afganistan, insurgents are deliberately targeting Afghan nationals who worked with U.S. forces.
Gorrell says dedicated Afghans who helped the U.S., and are at risk should have the opportunity to come to safety. He says the law allows 7500 visas to be issued, but that there’s a backlog of about 5000 applications.
Gorrell is asking the state legislature to pass a resolution calling for the federal government to expedite processing of applications, saying the delay is putting the lives of some allies, and their families at risk.
