Firefighters think they are close to declaring the 28,000 acre Springs Brush Fire fully contained, and believe it will happen later today.
The fire is at 85% containment this morning, with firefighters focusing on finding missed hot spots. The weather since Saturday has cooperated, with some rain, little wind, and higher humidity.
Because of the progress, the number of firefighters is down to just over 600, less than a third of the total at the peak of the blaze.
Even though 4,000 homes and business were threatened, none were destroyed. 15 were damaged by the blaze.
Over the weekend, fire investigators ruled out arson as the cause of the blaze, but say due to a lack of evidence, we will probably never know the exact cause. Even after full containment, it’s expected some firefighters will continue to patrol for hot spots for the next few days.
