A non profit land conservation agency today gave U-C Santa Barbara a former golf course in the Goleta area, as part of an effort to return the 64 acre chunk of property to wetlands.
The Trust for Public Land paid $7 million dollars for the Ocean Meadows Golf Course property last month.
The money came from a variety of sources, including a $2.5 million dollar grant from the California Coastal Conservancy, and $750,000 from Santa Barbara County.
The land is already home to some rare, and endangered fish, and birds.
The property is just north of UCSB’s Coal Oil Point Preserve, and will expand the protected area.
UCSB will begin a planning process to restore the land to its natural state, with officials saying they will work with the community to outline the effort.
