Annual Mussel Quarantine Along Santa Barbara, Ventura County Coastline Implemeted Early

The state’s annual quarantine of sport harvested mussel species along the state’s coastline, including the Ventura and Barbara County coastlines, is in effect early this year.

The quarantine usually takes effect on May 1st, but it was stepped up this year because testing showed high levels of toxins in the shellfish, as well as large quantities of algae which produce the toxin.

The toxins can lead to severe illness, and death. The warning doesn’t apply to commercially sold clams, mussels, scallops, and oysters, because those products undergo mandatory state testing to insure their safety.
