The Santa Barbara County Main Jail is almost back to normal today, after it was rocked by a major disturbance.
It started just before 4 p.m. yesterday, when a large trash can filled by inmates with combustible materials like bedding, clothing, and paper materials was set on fire.
Jail staff put out the fire, but there was heavy smoke, so evacuation of part of the jail was started. However, about two dozen inmates barricaded themselves in their cells, and refused to leave. The Sheriff’s Department sent in a special operations team which had to use tear gas to remove the barricaded inmates.
The jail was put on lockdown for several hours after the incident yesterday, but operations in most areas of the jail except the small area where inmates barricaded themselves in their cells have returned to normal.
One inmate was taken to the hospital for treatment of a head injury.
