One of nine relics stolen last year from the San Buenaventura Mission was never recovered, but a priest from a Philadelphia church who visited the Ventura Mission, and heard the story of the loss has come to the rescue.
The Reverend Gregory Cozzubbo heard about the thefts while visiting the mission, and arranged for it to get a replacement from his church in Philadelphia.
The mission’s Father Tom Elwaut says the still missing relic is a rather ornate four inch by four inch cross containing a bone chip of Saint Vincent de Paul.
A transient was arrested, and convicted of the theft of the relics, and eight of them were recovered. Edward Burgess had been using drugs, and told police he couldn’t remember what happened to the still missing ninth relic.
