Authorities say some ticks have tested positive for Lyme disease at a popular hiking area in the region.
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area officials say the ticks were discovered along the Coyote Trail, at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills.
Three separate pools of western black legged ticks carrying the bacteria were found along the trail.
Lyme disease starts as a mild flu-like illness, but it can lead to severe chronic health problems. If undiagnosed and untreated, it can be difficult to handle.
Hikers are being advised to check their clothing, and exposed skin before heading home.
Ticks with the disease have shown up in other parts of the national recreation area before, but this is the first time they’ve been found at Paramount Ranch.
