A popular Santa Barbara County beach is being closed because of people trespassing into areas restricted this time of year to protect the breeding grounds of a rare species of bird.
The Air Force is closing Surf Beach, on Vandenberg Air Force Base from April 10th through May 1st to try to protect Western Snowy Plovers.
The Air Force has responsibility for Wall, Surf, and Minuteman beaches, and routinely closes sections of them during plover breeding season.
But, officials say people have not been following the rules, and have been crossing into breeding habitats. As a result, the Air Force is temporarily closing Surf Beach. Docents and military personnel will patrol the beach to make sure there are no violations of the closure.
