It’s a situation which has marine biologists baffled, and worried.

Since the first of the year, there have been a record number of sea lion pup strandings along the Southern California, with many of them critically ill. More than a thousand of them have been rescued.

The concern is especially acute in our region, because the Channel Islands are home to the two most significant sea lion rookeries on the coastline.

KCLU’s Lance Orozco talks to one of the federal officials helping to lead efforts to figure out what’s occurring, and help the seriously ill pups.
