A man convicted of stealing relics from the San Buenaventura Mission has been sentenced to three years probation, plus mandatory participation in a drug treatment program.
Ventura Police say Edward Burgess stole nine artifacts from the mission last September.
Because the items were taken from the rectory, which is considered to be a part of where the priests live, the transient was convicted of second degree residential burglary.
Eight of the nine artifacts have been recovered, while the last one is still being sought.
The artifacts contain chips of the bones of historic religious leaders, Prosecutors has sought jail time for the 26 year old man.
