A Santa Barbara man is behind bars tonight, after police say without warning at a family dinner he slashed the throat of one of the guests.
The family was eating dinner just after 8:30 Saturday night at a home on the 1200 block of Crestline Drive, in Santa Barbara.
Police say Sam Wellington Maphis stood up, and walked behind the chair where a 60 year old guest was sitting, and without warning, cut her throat with a knife.
Investigators say he then threatened his uncle before fleeing.
Police called his cell phone, and found he was in Elings Park. Officers established a perimeter, and were able to convince Maphis to surrender about two hours later.
The 20 year old man was arrested for attempted murder, and making terrorist threats. Investigators say mental illness may be a factor in the attack.
The woman is expected to recover from her injuries.
