A man who introduced thousands of people to the Santa Barbara Channel, and its marine life over the decades has died.
Captain Fred Benko was a pioneer in the whale watching business, founding the Sea Landing charter service 40 years ago. He was known for his knowledgeable dialogue about whales, dolphins, and other aspects of the ocean during his forays into the channel.
Benko had been in declining health for the last few months. He was 73 years old.
