The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has received a major grant to restore a historic part of the 78 acre facility in the foothills above the city, giving it the original appearance it hasn’t had for more than 70 years.
The San Luis Obispo based Hind Foundation gave the garden $220,000 to restore the Garden’s Meadow. When the Garden was created in the 1920′s, the Meadow was designed as its centerpiece. However, weed infestations have spoiled every effort since the 1930′s to replant it.
The Botanic Garden plans to use the money to totally remove the weeds from the soil, and then grow more than 70,000 plugs of grass, and other plants to restore the Meadow to its original form.
