Camarillo Man Sentenced To 16 Months Behind Bars For Fatally Burning Family Dog

A Ventura County man has been sentenced to 16 months behind bars for dousing his family dog with lighter fluid, and fatally burning him.

Prosecutors say Andrew Delgado deliberately set the dog on fire last October in a ravine near the family’s home in Camarillo. Ventura County firefighters called about reports of a fire were unable to save the three year old basset hound, named Buddy.

The 18 year old potentially faced up to thee years behind bars.

His attorney had asked for probation, blaming the incident on drug use, and claiming the incident was an accident. Delgado had entered guilty pleas to arson, and animal cruelty charges.

The judge noted that he received a petition with more than 100,000 signatures from around the world calling for a harsh sentence in the case, which received widespread media attention.
