State Assemblyman Trying To Fix Issue Over Honorary Naming Of Highway In Ventura County

Posted on Friday, February 15, 2013 12:12pm

What started as a well intentioned effort in Ventura to honor the Seabees has turned into a minor embarrassment for the state assemblyman making the proposal, but he’s hoping to fix it this weekend.

Republican Assemblyman Jeff Gorrell of Camarillo had at the request of some Seabees proposed naming a section of Highway 1 near Naval Base Ventura County the Seabee Memorial Highway.

But, in 2002, at the request of some local veterans, the State Legislature approved naming Highway 1 in the county the Ventura County Vietnam Veterans Highway.

The group backing it even raised money for some highway signs.

The assemblyman’s office didn’t realize Highway 1 already had an honorary name on it at the time the Seabee proposal was drafted.

Gorrell issued an apology, and he’s meeting with the Vietnam veterans tomorrow, to try to see if they can reach a compromise to name a section of the highway after the Seabees.
