A big box store in Santa Barbara County is back in business today, but it was shut down for hours yesterday by a hazardous materials leak.
Reports of a chemical leak prompted employees to evacuate a Costco store on the 7000 block of Marketplace Drive in Goleta just before 4 p.m. yesterday.
Employees thought it might be a leak in a refrigeration unit. Santa Barbara County firefighters shut down the unit’s compressors, and the leak stopped. They determined the leak was a chemical known as R-22, which is a flammable gas that’s heavier than air. The firefighters vented the building, and employees were able to return to the store about two and a half hours later.
One employee was checked at the scene for possible exposure to the gas, but didn’t require treatment.
