The stars were out in Santa Barbara for the first weekend of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, with tributes to Ben Affleck and Daniel Day-Lewis highlighting the events.

Ventura County Woman Arrested On Charges She Used Identity Of Her Deceased Grandmother

A Ventura County woman has been arrested on burglary, and identity theft charges after Simi Valley Police say she was improperly using the bank account of her recently deceased grandmother.
Detectives say they began an investigation in October into the possible fraudulent use of the dead woman’s debit card, which had been used to withdraw money from her account, and make a number of purchases. The administrator of the woman’s estate hadn’t had the opportunity to closer the accounts yet.
Yesterday, they arrested 29 year old Crystal Bittner of Simi Valley. The investigators say she out of jail on bail for some pending drug related charges.
Authorities Looking For Serial Flasher In Ventura County

Police are looking for a serial flasher in Ventura County.
Oxnard police say there have been multiple incidents involving the same man.
The most recent case occurred around 7:30 Wednesday night, when a man exposed himself to a passing woman near J, and Santa Clara Streets.
Investigators say they are concerned because man has also targeted children on the way to school in the area.
He’s described as a Hispanic male in his 20’s, standing about 5’8”, with dark hair, brown eyes, and a scar over his right eyebrow.
He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes.
Reagan Library To Name Gallery After Longtime Ventura County Congressman

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is going to name one of its galleries after a recently retired Ventura County congressman who was a key part of the establishment of the facility.
Library officials say its “Peace Through Strength” gallery will be named after Congressman Elton Gallegly.
Gallegly left office last year, after serving 26 years in Congress.
The dedication ceremony honoring the Simi Valley Republican will take place in a private event at the library Saturday night.
New Fire Chief Selected For Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara had more than 30 applicants from people seeking to become the city’s next fire chief, but in the end, the city picked the person who was already doing the job on an interim basis.
Pat McElroy was appointed chief by City Administrator Jim Armstrong, pending final approval by the City Council.
McElroy has been with the department for more than 30 years, and was most recently Fire Operations Division Chief.
He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Andy DiMizio late last year.
Local Political Expert Weighs In On Governor’s “State Of State” Speech, Budget Proposal

For the first time in years, California may be in a position where it can approve a new budget without a major crisis, or massive new cuts.
In his “State Of The State” address yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown said the state is in the black, and on the comeback path.
He’s proposed a new budget which includes billions in additional funding for schools, holds the line on tuition hikes for higher education, and increases spending on social services.
KCLU’s Lance Orozco has highlights from the speech, and talks with a local political observer about the governor’s proposals.

Ben Affleck, Daniel Day-Lewis Among Honorees At Santa Barbara International Film Festival This Weekend

Thursday Night Opening Night Festivities For Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Photo By John Palminteri)
This is the first weekend of the 2013 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and some big events are on the schedule.
In addition to a full day of screenings, the festival is set to honor Ben Affleck tonight, with its “Modern Master Award” in an event at the Arlington Theater.
This weekend, one of the highlights will be a panel on directing, which will take place at the Lobero Theater Saturday morning.
Among the directors set to take part in the 9:45 a.m. event are Tom Hooper, who helmed “Les Miserables” and “The King’s Speech,” and David O. Russell, who directed “Silver Linings Playbook.”
And, tomorrow night, the festival will honor Daniel Day-Lewis with its “Montecito Award” in a ceremony at the Arlington Theater.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Miss Santa Barbara International Film Festival

As the 2013 Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicks off tonight, there’s word of a big change in the event’s lineup. Due to what the festival is calling a scheduling conflict, Leonardo DiCaprio won’t be on hand February 1st to accept its “Riviera Award.”
The festival will now give the award to director/screenwriter/actor Quentin Tarantino.
Tarantino directed DiCaprio in the movie “Django Unchained,” which is up for five Academy Awards. Some of his other critically acclaimed films include “Inglourious Basterds,” “Natural Born Killers,” and “Pulp Fiction”.
Dunkin’ Donuts Expanding To California, Including To Ventura County

A donuts and coffee chain which is hugely popular on the East Coast is coming to Southern California, including Ventura County.
Dunkin’ Donuts has announced plans to open 150 stores in six Southern California counties.
The company says it could eventually have as many as a thousand of the shops open statewide.
It’s not the first time Dunkin’ has tried to get a foothold in the state. It once had several stores in the state, but pulled out in the late 1990’s after the chain failed to develop traction..
Dunkin’ already does big business in the California, with its packaged coffee available in supermarkets. It also owns more than 450 Baskin-Robbins ice cream stores in the state.
