There are huge new developments in the wake of the Catholic Church priest abuse scandal in Southern California, with word that retired Cardinal Rodger Mahony has been stripped of his church duties, and that his former assistant, now Santa Barbara Bishop Thomas Curry has resigned.
The actions were announced in a written statement by Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, as the Archdiocese of Los Angeles released the personnel files of more than 120 Catholic priests as part of a 2007 clergy abuse legal settlement.
In the letter to parishioners, Gomez said the files would be disturbing to read. The records indicate there were efforts more than a decade ago to conceal the molestation of children from law enforcement.
In the letter, Gomez says that Mahoney has expressed his sorry to fully protect young people entrusted to his care. The letter also says that Curry has also apologized for his decisions while serving as Vicar For Clergy. He had been serving as Regional Bishop For Santa Barbara.
