Oxnard City Council Decides Not To Renew Contract For City Manager

Posted on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 3:14pm

Oxnard is dumping its longtime City Manager.

Following a closed session yesterday, the council announced it would not renew Ed Sotelo’s contract when it expires at the end of this month.

He’s been off the job for more than 11 months.

In January of 2012, the council put him on paid administrative leave, but didn’t disclose why it took the action. Sotelo had clashed with longtime mayor Tom Holden, even filing a complaint claiming he was harassed by the mayor. Sotelo was City Manager during a difficult period for the city, when the Ventura County District Attorney’s office investigated allegations of mishandling of contracts, and improper gifts to some officials.

No criminal charges were filed, but the report said there were numerous ethical lapses which it ordered the city to fix.

Assistant City Manager Karen Burnham has been serving as interim City Manager since last February.
