Transient Arrested In Connection With Fire Which Heavily Damaged Commerical Building In Santa Barbara

Posted on Friday, January 4, 2013 1:31pm

A transient is in jail today, accused of starting a fire which heavily damaged an industrial building in downtown Santa Barbara.

Andrew Gordon Easton was arrested a few blocks from the scene of yesterday’s blaze, on the 500 block of Chapala Street.

The fire was spotted just after noon yesterday, in a vacant building which used to be home to a car dealership. Firefighters knocked down the blaze in about a half hour, but not before it had heavily damaged the vacant building.

Investigators determined a small warming fire which had been next to the building triggered the blaze. Police say they found a witness who saw someone trying to put out the small fire yesterday morning.

The witness identified Easton as the man at the scene of the fire. The 41 year old transient has been charged with causing a structure fire without malice, which is a felony charge.
