A Ventura County pilot has been confirmed as the victim of a fatal helicopter crash in Kern County.
Karen Johnson of Camarillo had been flying a helicopter being used to try to help keep some agricultural crops from freezing.
The helicopter had been headed back to Delano Airport yesterday morning after a mission when it went down in heavy fog, crashing into a vineyard.
The wreckage was found about four hours after the helicopter disappeared. The 62 year old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Helicopters are sometimes used during cold snaps over agricultural fields to circulate air, to try to keep crops from freezing. The National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
