No Charges Filed In Connection With Fatal Ventura County Accident

Posted on Monday, December 17, 2012 5:35pm

Ventura County prosecutors say the crash of an SUV into a coffee shop which killed a man was an accident, and that they won’t file charges against the off-duty sheriff’s deputy who was driving the vehicle.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Cedarland was headed through Fillmore on December 13th of last year when he apparently had a seizure, and the vehicle veered out of control into a Starbucks.

One of the customers, Sergio Mendez of Fillmore, was fatally injured. The 30 year old Iraq War veteran died in surgery after the accident.

Investigators say the out of control vehicle crossed two lanes of oncoming traffic, and over two curbs before ending up in the Starbucks, a path so random that someone couldn’t have made it happen intentionally if they tried.

Cedarland is undergoing testing to try to determine the cause of the seizures. He’s no longer driving, but was licensed at the time of the fatal accident.
