A UC Santa Barbara physicist noted for groundbreaking research in the area of string theory is receiving one of the most prestigious international honors in physics.
Dr. Joseph Polchinski is one of three winners of the 2013 Physics Frontier Prize from the Milner Foundation.
The UCSB researcher is noted for his work in discovery of the atomic structure of black holes, predicted years ago by Stephen Hawking.
Polchinski is now in the running for the foundation’s $3 million dollar Fundamental Physics prize, and even if he doesn’t win it, will receive a guaranteed $300,000.
Those who don’t win the big prize are also automatically nominated again for the next five years.
