Congressional Group Asks Federal Homeland Security For Update On Efforts To Combat Smuggling Off Coast

Posted on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 12:56pm

A half dozen members of Congress from California are asking federal officials for information on what’s being done to fight increased smuggling operations along the Southern California coastline, including Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara is one of those asking the Department of Homeland Security for more information on what’s being done to combat the panga boat problem, and how federal agencies are working with state, and local law enforcement.

The ongoing problem received national attention earlier this month, when a Coast Guard petty officer was killed when a small military boat was hit by one of the panga boats in the Channel Islands.

The congressional group says it wants to make sure sufficient resources are being devoted to combating the surge in drug smuggling, and human trafficking by sea along the state’s coastline.
