Work Underway To Remove Dilapidated Remains Of Resort In Montecito

Posted on Friday, December 7, 2012 12:20am

Work is finally underway to remove the dilapidated remains of what was once one of Santa Barbara County’s most popular resorts.
Bulldozers are tearing down what was the Miramar Resort in Montecito.

The property has been in limbo for more than a decade, when it was sold to a hotel developer who wanted to refurbish, and reopen it as a high end resort.

After those plans fell apart, it changed hands twice more. Developer Rick Caruso, who built “The Grove” shopping and entertainment complex in Los Angeles, the “Promenade” in Westlake Village, and “The Lakes” in Thousand Oaks has permits to rebuild the resort.

But, he’s having trouble with financing, and has been in a dispute with Santa Barbara County over using a hotel bed tax rebate program to help.

While there are no firm plans to start work on a new resort, neighbors say they’re just happy what’s been an eyesore just off the 101 Freeway in Montecito is being removed.
