Man Arrested In Alabama For Three Decade Old Oxnard Murder Case Extradited To California

Posted on Monday, November 19, 2012 5:13pm

An Alabama man Oxnard Police believe is responsible for a three decade old sexual assault, and murder has been extradited to Ventura County, to stand trial.

The Ventura County Cold Case Task Force used DNA evidence to link Thomas Young of Fairfield, Alabama to the July 30th, 1980 killing of Stacy Knappenberger in her Oxnard home. Investigators say the 15 year old girl had been beaten, stabbed, and sexually assaulted.

Detectives say the now 65 year old Alabama man’s DNA was in a data base as the result of another crime, and when they used new technology to enter DNA collected at the crime scene 32 years ago, they got a match.

Young refused voluntary extradition, but the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office got a governor’s warrant, which was approved by Alabama authorities. He arrived in Ventura County late last night, and during a court appearance this morning, arraignment was set for December 5th.
