Posted on Thursday, November 8, 2012 5:43pm

A Santa Barbara County tow truck driver is recovering from a dangerous incident, in which he, and a fire truck at the scene of a traffic accident were hit by a passing big rig’s trailer.

It happened just before 9:30 Thursday morning, on the southbound 101 Freeway near the Gaviota rest stop.

Richard Reeder was outside of his tow truck, trying to remove an overturned vehicle, when the rear trailer of a passing big rig
sideswiped a parked fire truck, and then hit the 59 year old man.

He suffered fractures, and cuts, but fortunately none of his injuries were life threatening. No one else was hurt.

The accident happened in rainy conditions, and the driver of the big rig was unaware of what had happened. He was stopped a few miles away by CHP officers. There’s no word yet on whether he’s being cited.
